Mark and David stood near the edge of the rock wall they’d climbed and discussed the implications of what they’d seen through the binoculars.

“Mark, I think we should send the girls back to the house to call Señor Velazquez about this helicopter,” David said quietly. “And if he knows nothing about it, then he should call the police.”

Mark lowered the binoculars and glanced sharply at his friend. “Think we should go take a look over there?”

“Well, we’re on horseback. We could walk the horses most of the way, then tie them and sneak up to the helicopter. We might learn something.”

“We sure don’t want to get caught!”

“You’re right. But if Maria’s dad calls the police, they’ll be on their way already. We can just sneak up close enough to see what’s going on, then retreat to the horses and ride back to the house. And you know what? Those guys and the helicopter could be working for Señor Velazquez. This could all be perfectly legal. Maybe we’re just gun-shy, looking for trouble where there isn’t any.”

“Well, if that’s the case,” Mark said, “Raoul could have been searching for the chopper because he expected it. Maybe he was worried because he didn’t find it at first. This is a big farm, after all.”

David considered Mark’s words for a moment and then said, “Let’s ask the girls to ride back to the house and call Maria’s father. If those men are working for him, there’s no problem. But if they’re not, her dad can call the police.”

The two walked over to Maria and Penny and began to explain what they’d seen and what they planned to do.

“But, David, why don’t we all ride to the house?” Penny asked. “We can call from there and find out all we want to know!”

Mark spoke first. “Penny, we’re not really sure about those guys and that helicopter. We don’t want to panic if there’s no reason to - maybe they’re working for Maria’s dad. But if they’re not, we might see something up close that will give us a hint. And we’ll be in the trees all the way. We’ll tie the horses some distance away. Those men won’t see us, and we just might learn something.”

Finally, the girls agreed, and the four walked as quickly as they could down the narrow ledge to the ground below, untied their horses, and mounted.

The two girls couldn’t keep the worry off their faces as they said good-bye.

“Please be careful!” Penny said.

“We promise!” both boys replied.

“Hurry now,” Mark said. “You’ve got to call Maria’s dad right away. And if we see anything dangerous, we’ll sneak back to the horses and gallop home.”

With that assurance, the girls turned their mounts and put them to a gallop.
