Mark and David stood near the edge of the rock wall theyâd climbed and discussed the implications of what theyâd seen through the binoculars.
âMark, I think we should send the girls back to the house to call Señor Velazquez about this helicopter,â David said quietly. âAnd if he knows nothing about it, then he should call the police.â
Mark lowered the binoculars and glanced sharply at his friend. âThink we should go take a look over there?â
âWell, weâre on horseback. We could walk the horses most of the way, then tie them and sneak up to the helicopter. We might learn something.â
âWe sure donât want to get caught!â
âYouâre right. But if Mariaâs dad calls the police, theyâll be on their way already. We can just sneak up close enough to see whatâs going on, then retreat to the horses and ride back to the house. And you know what? Those guys and the helicopter could be working for Señor Velazquez. This could all be perfectly legal. Maybe weâre just gun-shy, looking for trouble where there isnât any.â
âWell, if thatâs the case,â Mark said, âRaoul could have been searching for the chopper because he expected it. Maybe he was worried because he didnât find it at first. This is a big farm, after all.â
David considered Markâs words for a moment and then said, âLetâs ask the girls to ride back to the house and call Mariaâs father. If those men are working for him, thereâs no problem. But if theyâre not, her dad can call the police.â
The two walked over to Maria and Penny and began to explain what theyâd seen and what they planned to do.
âBut, David, why donât we all ride to the house?â Penny asked. âWe can call from there and find out all we want to know!â
Mark spoke first. âPenny, weâre not really sure about those guys and that helicopter. We donât want to panic if thereâs no reason to - maybe theyâre working for Mariaâs dad. But if theyâre not, we might see something up close that will give us a hint. And weâll be in the trees all the way. Weâll tie the horses some distance away. Those men wonât see us, and we just might learn something.â
Finally, the girls agreed, and the four walked as quickly as they could down the narrow ledge to the ground below, untied their horses, and mounted.
The two girls couldnât keep the worry off their faces as they said good-bye.
âPlease be careful!â Penny said.
âWe promise!â both boys replied.
âHurry now,â Mark said. âYouâve got to call Mariaâs dad right away. And if we see anything dangerous, weâll sneak back to the horses and gallop home.â
With that assurance, the girls turned their mounts and put them to a gallop.
